Itinerary

Day 1
UK-Strasbourg

Meet your tour manager in London then take the Eurostar to Paris, and the TGV direct to Strasbourg for your two-night stay at the locally rated 4-star Kyriad Prestige (3Q). Dinner is included at the hotel. D

Day 2
Strasbourg

You’ll have a full day to explore this delightful French city – the capital of the Alsace region – which was restored to France in 1919, after centuries of tug-of-war with Germany. An included city tour this morning will lead you past the charming half-timbered houses of Petite France that line the criss-crossing canals, and on to the impressive Gothic cathedral. This afternoon, perhaps take an optional trip to Colmar to see its beautifully preserved Old Town and the Isenheim Altarpiece. B, D

Optional excursions

Colmar |Half day

Enjoy a guided tour of the beautifully preserved Old Quarter, which was founded in the 9th century. This area has been dubbed ‘Little Venice’ because of its network of canals.

Day 3
Strasbourg to Freudenstadt via Obernai

Head for Germany today via Obernai, where the fortified walls of the Old Quarter shelter pretty, half-timbered houses. Then continue to Freudenstadt for a five night stay at the locally-rated 3 star Hotel Teuchelwald (3Q) which is beautifully situated in lovely parkland, it’s just a short walk from the centre of town and close to the pretty Frederick’s Tower. B, D

Day 4
Triberg

Enjoy free time at leisure this morning. You may like to venture to the market square in the centre of town, where you’ll find the historic town hall, or perhaps seek out Frederick’s Tower, which was built in 1899 to celebrate the town’s 300th anniversary. This afternoon there is an included excursion to Triberg. Here see the world’s largest cuckoo clock, the size of a house – the cuckoo alone weighs 330 pounds. On the outskirts of town, the Triberg waterfalls – Germany’s highest falls – drop 163 metres over seven cascades. You’ll also visit the Black Forest Museum – expect to see lots of clocks, barrel organs, music boxes and traditional costumes. B, D

Day 5
Baden Baden

Follow the scenic Black Forest Highway to the elegant spa town of Baden Baden. Visitors still take a dip in the town’s famous salt-rich thermal hot springs. You might prefer to take a picturesque stroll along the Lichtentaler Allee – a meandering green ribbon pathway alongside the River Oos. Here you’ll see stunning manicured gardens and views of grand old hotels and palatial homes across the river. Also on the Lichtentaler Allee is a superb new museum housing the modernist art collection of Frieder Burda. B, D

Day 6
Freudenstadt

At leisure, perhaps take a walk in the Black Forest. B, D

Day 7
Sauschwanzlebahn and Lake Titisee

Today head out on the Sauschwänzlebahn, or the Pigtail Line, to ride a late 19th-century steam train along a stretch of this famous track which follows an endlessly curving route over bridges and viaducts, and through spiralling tunnels. In Lake Titisee you’ll stop for light lunch, then take a scenic boat trip across the lake’s placid waters to admire the glorious views. B, L, D

Day 8
Freudenstadt-UK

After breakfast take the TGV to Paris, and the Eurostar to St Pancras. B
