Optional excursions

Torralba and Church of SS Trinita di Saccargia |full day

Discover Sardinia’s fascinating prehistoric and Romanesque heritage on an optional excursion. Travel to Torralba, east of Alghero. Set in a valley in the mountains, Torralba is the home of the Nuraghic Palace of Santu Antine, with its surrounding ‘village’ – archaeological remains of these extraordinary buildings. Nuraghi are conical stone-built towers dating roughly to between 1500-800 BC and are unique to Sardinia (another site on the island has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The main palace building is 17 metres high and lies at the centre of the site, which is also home to a museum. Afterwards visit the famous Romanesque church of SS Trinità di Saccargia, situated on the Logudoro hills and built by Camaldolite monks in the 12th century. The influence of Sardinia’s historic Pisan overlords can clearly be seen in its distinctive striped exterior, and wonderful interior fresco to the apse dating to the late 12th century.

It was settled mostly in the 18th century, but because of its strategic position was a desirable possession. The Maddalena islanders successfully repulsed Napoleon’s attempt to land in 1793, while Lord Nelson anchored his fleet in the island’s safe waters prior to the Battle of Trafalgar.

The capital of the island is also called La Maddalena and lies on the coast, overlooked by the Guardia Vecchia fortress.
