UK to Budapest
Fly to Hungary’s capital and embark Filia Rheni II. Moor overnight and enjoy a welcome cocktail reception and dinner on board this evening. Your ship remains moored here overnight.
A city of two halves – Buda and Pest – the Hungarian capital is a cosmopolitan, culture-rich centre. Buda is the older part, with cobbled streets and medieval architecture, while Pest is the administrative and commercial centre characterised by wide avenues and impressive 19th-century public buildings. This morning, you can enjoy an included tour of the vibrant capital that reveals the highlights, including the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Buda Castle. Set sail this afternoon and cruise through the night.
Arrive in Vukovar, the largest Croatian town and river port on the Danube, before breakfast, Vukovar was a thriving town before the Yugoslav War. Unscathed belle époque architecture can be compared with shell-scarred buildings preserved in memoriam, during your visit here. Set sail at lunchtime and cruise overnight.
Welcome to the dramatic Iron Gate gorge. No doubt you’ll want to head out on deck to admire this particularly scenic stretch of the river, as the Danube passes through the Carpathian mountains and the foothills of the Balkans. Plus you can follow proceedings as the ship manoeuvres through two locks by the Djerdap power stations.
This morning you arrive in Rousse, the largest port in Bulgaria and often referred to as ‘Little Vienna’. Legend has is that the city takes its name from a female founder named ‘Rusa’ in honour of her fiery red hair. Perhaps discover the city on an optional walking tour and admire the 19th-century Austro-Hungarian architecture of its beautiful city centre. Also have a look around the Church of the Holy Trinity, Rousse’s oldest church, built in 1632. Set off again at lunch time and cruise through the night.
Enjoy the scenery as you cruise the wildlife-rich Danube Delta. Much of it is a protected reserve, as the meandering river, reed beds and groves of willow, oak and poplar provide sanctuary for over 300 species of bird. You may like to join an optional small boat cruise further into this UNESCO-listed Biosphere Reserve. Some of the species that you may be lucky enough to spy here include pelicans, herons, swans and ducks.
Chiciu to Bucharest
Disembark after breakfast and continue by coach to Bucharest. An included tour of this lively city reveals some of its highlights, such as the impressive Palace of the Parliament, Cotroceni Palace where the President of Romania resides, and historic Cretulescu Palace. Lunch is included during your tour. Tonight you’ll stay in the heart of the capital, at the locally rated 5-star Sheraton Bucharest Hotel (4Q), with dinner included.
