Itinerary

Day 1
UK-Atlanta

After taking Saga’s included UK door-to-door travel service to the airport, fly to Atlanta in Georgia and transfer to the Hyatt Place Buckhead (3Q), where you stay for two nights.

Day 2
Atlanta

Take an included tour of the city home to Scarlett O’Hara and Coca-Cola, as well as the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr. You’ll cruise down Peachtree Street in the heart of the city and see the golden dome and classical portico of the Georgia State Capitol. You’ll also visit the The King Centre, a museum dedicated the Civil Rights leader’s life and work; it’s also Martin Luther King Jr’s final resting place. B

Day 3
Atlanta-Charleston

During the journey to Charleston in South Carolina you’ll visit the rather lovely Magnolia Plantation, known for its stunning gardens, which have been famous in the South for more than 140 years. Wander among the flower beds and box hedges to discover mazes, woodland walks and a peaceful lake. The plantation has been in the Drayton family for more than 300 years, and the family still lives in the historic plantation house here. Spend three nights at the Hyatt Place (3Q) in Charleston’s Historic District. B

Day 4
Charleston

Discover the gorgeous Georgian architecture of Charleston as you explore on an included tour. See the waterfront and the Old Slave Mart, where slaves were sold at auction right up until the end the American Civil War. With some free time you’ll have the chance to enjoy a leisurely lunch in a local bistro too. B

Day 5
Savannah

Spend a day enjoying the Southern charm and antebellum grace of Savannah, which is characterised by colonial mansions, grand squares and a welcoming atmosphere. After a tour of the city you’ll have all afternoon to explore at your leisure – perhaps take to the historic streets by horse-drawn carriage or stroll through Forsyth Park to see its beautiful 19th-century fountain. B

Day 6
Charleston-Wilmington

Cross from South to North Carolina today as you travel to Wilmington on the banks of the Cape Fear River, and enjoy an included tour. Spend two nights at the Hilton Riverside (3Q). B

Day 7
Wilmington

Spend the day at leisure in this historic port city where you can stroll along the Riverwalk with its boutiques and galleries, or venture further out to one of the three nearby beach towns popular with surfers. B

Day 8
Wilmington-Outer Banks

Today you travel to the Outer Banks, a 200-mile stretch of peninsulas and islands which separates the coast of North Carolina from the Atlantic Ocean. Spend two nights at the Hilton Garden Inn Outer Banks/Kitty Hawk (3Q). B

Day 9
Outer Banks

Spend the day exploring the Outer Banks region, beginning with a visit to Elizabeth Gardens, named after Elizabeth I. Cross to Roanoke Island where you can learn about the mystery of the Lost Colony – one of England’s first attempts to settle the New World in 1587. When the governor returned to the Roanoke colony after a three-year absence he found the place deserted – the truth behind the disappearance of the colonists eludes experts to this day. Later you see the Bodie Island Lighthouse before visiting the Wright Brothers National Memorial, which commemorates the pioneering aviators Orville and Wilbur Wright and their first successful flight in 1903. B

Day 10
Outer Banks-Raleigh

Head to Raleigh, the state capital of North Carolina, and enjoy a tour of the city by vintage trolleybus, taking you through downtown to the City Market. Spend two nights at the Hyatt Place Midtown (3Q). B

Day 11
Raleigh

Today is at leisure in Raleigh. Perhaps visit one of the many museums in town or take a tour of the State Capitol building. B

Day 12
Raleigh-Charlotte

Travel to Charlotte for an included tour and a visit to the NASCAR Hall of Fame to learn about this popular American motorsport. Spend three nights at the Hyatt Place Downtown (3Q). B

Day 13
Charlotte

Today you visit the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, amid acres of idyllic meadows and woodlands. There’s a nature trail, fountains and glorious floral displays for you to admire, plus a huge conservatory full of tropical plants and orchids. The afternoon is at leisure. B

Day 14
Charlotte

Today is at leisure, perhaps join an optional excursion to the Biltmore Estate. B

This extravagant, vast estate encompasses 32 square-kilometres of landscaped formal gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmsted – the man behind Central Park in New York and San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The main house is huge – the largest privately owned residence in the country – and built to resemble a French chateau. As you explore the lavish interior you’ll see a wealth of period clothing and furniture plus original collections by Renoir and Sargent, glorious 16th-century tapestries, a library with 10,000 books, an indoor pool and a bowling alley!
