Day 1
UK to San Jos

After taking Sagas included UK door-to-door travel service to the airport, depart in the morning for your daytime flight to San Jos and stay two nights at the Barcel San Jos (3Q). The hotel’s free bar is open from 10am to 10pm. D

Departures pre-September 2017 stay at Hotel Villa Tournon on days 1, 2, and 14.


Day 2
San Jos

This morning join an optional visit to Poas Volcano and the Doka Coffee Estate.

Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. B, L, D

Poas Volcano and Doka Coffee Estate |Half day

Visit Poas Volcano where a green lake sits in the centre, surrounded by steaming fumaroles.

Then continue to the Doka Estate, where the Santa Eduviges farm produces one of Costa Rica’s most popular coffee grains.


Day 3
San Jos-Trcoles

An included morning tour of the capital visits the National Museum and the National Theatre. Spend four nights at the Hotel Villa Lapas (3Q) in a private reserve on the River Tarcolitos, staying in basic, bungalow-style lodges. Free bar from 10am to 10pm daily. B, L, D


Day 4

An optional excursion visits one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful reserves where turquoise waters lap white beaches fringed by lush rainforest. You may see sloths, iguanas, howler and white-faced monkeys. B, L, D

Manuel Antonio National Park |Full day

Enjoy a walk in the rainforest in the company of a naturalist guide. The dense forest here camouflages toucans, parakeets and hummingbirds. You may see some of the parks monkeys the endangered Mono Titi, or Central American squirrel monkey, white-faced capuchin monkeys, and the vociferous howler monkeys.


Day 5
Carara National Park

Look out for scarlet macaws and flycatchers on an included excursion to one of the finest birdwatching sites in Costa Rica. There’s also an optional aerial tram ride in the afternoon. B, L, D

Pacific Aerial Tram |Three hours

The Pacific Rainforest Aerial Tram (a suspended cable car) is set in 90 hectares of forest. You can also go for nature trails (there are ratings for the varying degrees of difficulty), visit the medicinal plants garden, the heliconias gallery and the snake exhibition.


Day 6

At leisure, or join an optional excursion to Turu Ba Ri Tropical Park for a guided tour through the botanical gardens to see the wildlife and exotic plants. B, L, D

Join a nature trail in search of iguanas, crocodiles, butterflies, as well as many beautiful plants. There’s also a farm, a sugar mill and even the chance to go horse-riding. There are plenty of opportunities to get a bird’s-eye view from cable cars, and zip-wires.


Day 7
Trcoles-Muelle de San Carlos

You can join an optional boat ride this morning, venturing onto the river in search of crocodiles. You leave Tarcoles later today and travel to the Tilajari Resort Hotel (3Q) for a seven-night stay. The hotel is set in 35 acres of gardens with orchids and a butterfly garden dome. The free bar here is open from 10am to 10pm daily. B, L, D

Jungle Crocodile and Bird Safari |Two hours

Enjoy a two-hour mini-cruise on board a pontoon boat on the Trcoles River. This river is considered to have the highest number of American crocodiles in the world along the last ten miles before the delta! But crocodiles are only one of the attractions, because the river is also one of the best places in the country to spot tropical birds.

Muelle de San Carlos

Spend today at leisure, either relaxing at your hotel or exploring your surroundings. B, L, D


Day 9
Rainforest walk

Explore the foliage, flora and wildlife of the rainforest on a half-day included guided jungle walk, with a further optional guided walk of the lava trails. B, L, D


Optional excursions

Lava Trails |Half day

An experienced naturalist guide will lead you on a walk through rainforest to an area near an active volcano. Observe the volcano from the safety of an observation point close to its base.


Day 10
Muelle de San Carlos

Enjoy the next four days at leisure to take advantage of the hotel’s facilities, with a choice of excursions you might like to join. Today’s optional excursion is a boat ride down the Peas Blancas River, with unrivalled opportunities to spot hummingbirds, monkeys, sloths, anteaters and rare butterflies. B, L, D

This guided excursion takes you by a flat-bottomed boat on a gentle journey down the Peas Blancas River, home to a variety of wildlife, such as monkeys, sloths, iguanas and crocodiles.


Day 11
Muelle de San Carlos

Today you can join a thrilling optional excursion to the rainforest and cross bridges and walkways suspended high above the ground in the canopy. Alternatively, indulge your sweet tooth with a visit to a chocolate plantation. B, L, D

Canopy walk and hanging bridges |Half day

The rainforest canopy walk covers 3100 metres and enables you to enjoy the great diversity of birds and plants. You’ll make your way across hanging bridges for an unforgettable experience.


Chocolate plantation |Half day

Discover the art of chocolate production with a visit to a chocolate plantation. Learn more about the cacao tree and the production process, from harvesting the fruit, to drying and grinding the seed.


Day 12
Muelle de San Carlos

Visit the Cao Negro Wildlife Refuge and enjoy a two-and-a-half-hour floating safari on an optional excursion. At dusk there’s an optional excursion to a hot springs complex in the middle of the rainforest. Take a dip in the pools, naturally heated by the Arenal Volcano, stand under a cascading waterfall and enjoy a drink at the bar. B, L, D

Cao Negro Wildlife Refuge |Half day

The Cao Negro Wildlife Refuge is an important area of wetlands in northern Costa Rica and is home to three species of monkey, iguanas, sloths, turtles and caymans.
You’ll travel to the village of Los Chiles to board a boat for a two-and-a-half hour floating safari through the rainforest and pastures until you reach the birdwatchers’ paradise.


Ecothermal Hot Springs at La Fortuna |Two hours

Treat yourself to a dusk trip to the middle of the rainforest to enjoy a dip in ecothermal hot springs naturally heated by Arenal Volcano.

See how a Costa Rican family grow pineapples, papayas and medicinal plants on this optional excursion. B, L, D

Don Juan Eco-farm |Four hours

Meet a rural Costa Rican family who’ll show you the most important facets of a self-sufficient farm. Your tour of the farm also shows you how waste material is recycled in order to produce methane for cooking.


Day 14
Muelle de San Carlos-San Jos

Return to San Jos and Barcelo San Jose (3Q) where you stay overnight. En route there will be an included tour of La Paz waterfall gardens. Enjoy a farewell dinner and live marimba music this evening. B, L, D


Day 15
San Jos to UK

Travel to the airport for your return overnight flight to the UK. B, L


Day 16

Arrive in the UK this morning and take your included UK door-to-door travel service home.
