UK to Vienna
Fly to Vienna for a three-night stay at the 4-star Mercure Grand Hotel Biedermeier (4Q) in the south-east part of central Vienna. Your stay is on a half-board basis, with one dinner at a local restaurant and two dinners at the hotel.
Enjoy an included half-day tour of Vienna, the legendary city of the Hapsburgs. Your tour includes a drive around the Ringstrasse, a wide avenue encircling the old city, taking in all its historic buildings. Tonight, enjoy a meal at the atmospheric Augustinerkeller restaurant, which is located in one of the last monastery cellars of Vienna’s Old Town.
Enjoy a day at leisure in Vienna. This evening, savour an included concert. The programme will include works by Mozart and Johann Strauss.
Vienna to Dürnstein
Spend a final morning in Vienna before embarking Filia Rheni ll. Begin your cruise along the Danube to Dürnstein and enjoy a welcome reception and dinner on board tonight.
Dürnstein to Melk
Spend part of the morning in Dürnstein, set in the beautiful Wachau valley, before setting sail to Melk where you’ll have the opportunity to visit its Benedictine Abbey. Excursion participants rejoin the ship in Ybbs.
Arrive in Passau shortly after breakfast. Enjoy the morning exploring the ‘Venice of Bavaria’, set at the meeting point of three rivers – the Danube, Inn and Ilz, and surrounded by wooded hills. Or, to make the most of your visit why not join an optional city walk and hear the history of this attractive town? Filia Rheni ll departs at lunchtime and cruises through the night from Germany, right across Austria and into Slovakia.
This afternoon you arrive in Slovakia’s capital, Bratislava. Spend an enjoyable afternoon exploring the city’s old quarter, overlooked by the massive rectangular castle, and admiring the attractive Hapsburg architecture. Set sail again in the early hours.
Esztergom is perhaps the most beautiful of the cluster of small towns on the Danube Bend, and home to Hungary’s largest basilica, the dome of which can be seen for miles around. Explore here and the artistic community of Szentendre on an optional excursion. Depart at lunchtime and cruise to Kalocsa.
Today you arrive in Kalocsa during breakfast, giving you the morning to explore the picturesque town founded by Hungary’s first king, St Stephen, on the Great Hungarian Plain. The town is famous for its folk art and its Paprika Museum! An optional excursion explores the Pustza or Great Plains – the largest area of grassland in Europe. Cruise to Budapest this afternoon, arriving late tonight.
Awake in Budapest for a full day and overnight stay. This cosmopolitan city is divided by the Danube into Buda and Pest. An included city tour reveals some of the city’s highlights, from the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Buda Castle that sits above the river on the west bank, to the impressive Hungarian Parliament buildings in Pest on the east bank.
