Overview

This journey combines the flavour of West and East with images of modern city life within the ancient and historic backgrounds of three grand capital cities Bucharest, Sofia and Istanbul. We can book various categories of hotels to suit every budget and it possible to vary the types of hotels on your holiday. For this itinerary we have included good standard centrally located four-star hotels. Travel between each city is on the day train from Bucharest to Sofia and coach from Sofia to Istanbul.

Day 2 | BUCHAREST

Free days to explore Bucharest or book optional excursions. (B)Don your most comfortable walking shoes to explore Bucharests highlights as many are conveniently located in the city centre. First stop has to be the sprawling Parliament Palace, second only in size to the Pentagon. Such Communist excess contrasts with the wealth of Belle poque buildings and the glorious old quarter of Lipscani. Escape the bustle and visit the green lung of the city, Cismigiu Gardens, whose lake you can row across in the summer and skate on in the winter. Browse designer shops, attend a concert at the Romanian Athenaeum and sample some down-to-earth Romanian fare.

Day 4 | BUCHAREST TO SOFIA

Take day train to Sofia. Check in to hotel for 3 nights. (B)


Day 5 | SOFIA

Free days to explore Sofia or book optional excursions. (B)Visitors are charmed by Sofia with its wide boulevards and compact city centre where many of its attractions are clustered. Ornate Alexander Nevsky Church and the exquisite synagogue are a must and make sure you see the sedate changing of the guard at the Presidency. For stunning views over the city take the cable car up Mount Vitosha. Take a picnic with you made up of a mouth-watering selection of bread and cheeses from the Central Market. Try the local wine, enjoy live traditional music in restaurants housed in restored mansions and take in a concert at the mammoth Soviet-era National Palace of Culture.

Day 7 | SOFIA TO ISTANBUL

Take the day bus to Istanbul which departs Sofia at 0715 and arrives in Istanbul at 1600 (please note it is possible to fly direct from Sofia to Istanbul contact us for prices). Check in to hotel for 4 nights. (B)


Day 8 | ISTANBUL

(B)Start your days with a Turkish coffee served in the lively Old Town of Sultanahmet and be tempted by the many varieties of Turkish delights and cakes along with the colourful tiles, textiles and spices of the maze-like bazaars. Visit the beautiful Blue Mosque, Haghia Sofia and Topkapi Palace, and enjoy the freshest fish in town in the pretty restaurants along the Bosphorus. Escape the hustle and bustle of Istanbul with a day trip to Buyukada Island, the largest of nine islands that make up the Princes Islands in the Sea of Marmara. No motorised vehicles are allowed so horse-drawn carriages allow you to explore this peaceful island withits wooden villas and fragrant gardens of honeysuckle and jasmine.
