The first stop on your festive cruise is the ancient Portuguese capital, from which many Portuguese explorers set off on their seafaring adventures. The Monument to the Discoveries, a 165-feet high sculpture of famous explorers and navigators gathered together on the prow of a ship, commemorates them, and it can be seen on your approach to the port. During your visit, you might like to visit Mafra National Park, which was often frequented by Portuguese royalty on hunting trips.
Santa Cruz, Tenerife
A rugged island of sweeping valleys, towering peaks, caves and golden beaches, Tenerife’s varied landscape is crowned by Mount Teide volcano. On Christmas Day sail into the capital, Santa Cruz, with its 16th-century buildings, shady boulevards and pretty squares. Look forward to a special open-air evening Christmas Concert with classical music performed by international artists, followed by a spectacular fireworks display. Perhaps spend Boxing Day on a whale watching cruise or head to UNESCO-listed La Laguna.
Santa Cruz, La Palma
Santa Cruz sits on the slope of a volcanic crater and was once an important trading port between Africa and the Americas. In 1553 the city was ransacked by French pirate Jambe de Bois, who gained his name after an unfortunate injury during a battle with the English, and became known as ‘Pegleg’: he was the first pirate to don the iconic attachment! Santa Cruz was later rebuilt with renewed fortifications, many of which remain today. Perhaps take a tour of the city and island to uncover its rich colonial history or enjoy a walk through beautiful Los Tilos forest, a World Biosphere Reserve which preserves a large area of the original laurel forest.
San Sebastian, La Gomera
Another beautiful Canary Island awaits you today. Far less developed than the neighbouring islands, La Gomera’s terraced hillsides and craggy outcrops are all part of its rugged charm. The forests are almost permanently shrouded in mist, resulting in especially lush vegetation. Perhaps visit Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can explore the ancient laurel forests, or call at the Valley of the Great King, home to the last of the islands Guanche chieftains.
Las Palmas, Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is a beautiful, sun-kissed isle dotted with historic buildings and charming fishing ports. You’ll be able to admire the brightly-painted houses and distinctive architecture of Las Palmas, the lively capital which is set on the north coast between two spectacular bays.
Madeira is famous for its natural scenery and native flora. Perhaps take a cable car ride up to Monte for spectacular views and the chance to return downhill on the islands famous basket toboggans, pay a visit to the botanical gardens in Funchal to see the floral highlights of the island, or take a walk along the island’s levadas narrow aqueducts or channels built to transport water from the north of the island to the drier south. An overnight stay gives you plenty of time to explore and to welcome in the New Year in style with a spectacular fireworks display over the island.
