You’ll be far from the well-trodden tourist trail at the 18-room Dera Dune Retreat, located atop a 100-foot sand dune in the Thar Desert. With no WiFi or television in any of the 18 air-conditioned thatched cottages, you can really immerse yourself in your peaceful surroundings. During your leisure time you can choose a book from the well-stocked library, take a swim in the outdoor pool, maybe take a stroll out across the dunes or challenge someone to a game of cricket, croquet, badminton or a less energetic board game! Delicious Indian cuisine will be served in the elegant restaurant, you can take tea in the lounge and make use of the free bar, open from 11am to 7pm and serving local wines, beers and spirits. B, D

Day 5
Kheechan and Phalodi

Every year, thousands of Demoiselle cranes make their home in the village of Kheechan, having migrated from the Siberian winter, and every year for decades the villagers have welcomed them with food and fondness. Take some rupees and you’ll see lots of tempting things to buy including the town’s trademark embroidered shoes and beautiful bead jewellery. B L D
