Day 2 Powderham Castle
Powderham Castle is filled with majestic rooms and secret doors, which tell 600 years of stories of the Courtenay family, the Earls of Devon, and their staff. Spend time hearing the tales and exploring the acres of deer park before we take a coastal tour by coach, which includes the traditional Victorian seaside town of Torquay and old fishing town of Brixham.
Day 3 Exeter
An insightful guided tour reveals notable features of Exeters crown jewel, the stunning cathedral. It includes beautifully detailed stained-glass windows, striking 12th-century towers, the longest stretch of attached Gothic vaulting in England, and an exquisite astronomical clock. You have some free time in the city before we board a boat for a cruise on the River Exe. Enjoy afternoon tea as you take in beautiful sights and hopefully some wildlife – several seals come here to feed.
Day 4 Dartmoor National Park – Buckfast Abbey – South Devon Railway
Today we travel by coach to the gorgeous tor-topped hills and heathered moorland of Dartmoor National Park. Well make stops at scenic towns and villages allowing you time to take photos of the beautiful scenery. Spend time at Buckfast Abbey, a tranquil refuge founded in 1018, restored and used as a working monastery today. The Monastic Shop has an extraordinary array of products made by nuns and monks across Europe, while the garden offers calmness with the scent of lavender on the breeze. Then, in Buckfastleigh, we head to the South Devon Railway, the longest established steam railway in the south west, to travel in vintage carriages through scenic valleys and farmland, to Totnes Littlehempston and back.
