Krems to Melk
Wake up in Krems, the gateway to the Wachau Valley and one of the oldest cities in Austria, with a history stretching back more than a thousand years. Spend the early afternoon cruising through the scenic Wachau region, passing terraced vineyards and attractive towns en route to Melk. An optional guided tour of the abbey may be available.
Spend the early morning cruising along the Danube before reaching Passau, the most easterly city in Bavaria, arriving before lunchtime. You may like to take a short optional walking tour of Passau’s highlights with a local guide. The oldest part of the town stands on a narrow tongue of land between the Inn and the Danube – most of the main sights are very close to the Danube.
Regensburg to Kelheim
Reach the lovely old town of Regensburg this morning. An optional short orientation tour here will reveal the highlights of this wealthy and successful medieval town featuring ancient Roman, Romanesque and Gothic buildings, including the market, city hall and cathedral. There’s also the chance to join an optional excursion to Weltenburg Abbey. Set sail later this afternoon, pausing in Kelheim this evening for excursion participants to rejoin the ship.
Roth to Nuremberg
Pause briefly in Roth this morning before arriving in Nuremberg early this afternoon. An included sightseeing tour will reveal the major sights of this historic Bavarian city, from its medieval beginnings to the present. Long famous for the manufacture of toys, it achieved infamy in the 20th century as the setting for the notorious Nazi rallies and, later, for the War Crimes Trials of 1945-46.
You’ll have all morning to explore Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Or you may prefer to join an optional walking tour to see the key sights. Enjoy an afternoon of leisurely cruising along the Main towards Würzburg, passing the vineyards of Franconia.
Arrive for a full day in the historic city of Würzburg at 8am. An important city in the Middle Ages, its present appearance is owed to the prince-bishops of the Schönborn family. An optional city sightseeing tour is available.
Spend the morning cruising through the thickly wooded region of Baden-Württemberg en route to Miltenberg, arriving early afternoon. This ancient town occupies a picturesque location on the banks of the Main and you will have time to look around. Why not explore the Old Town’s 13th-century castle and old wine tavern before leaving later this afternoon.
Rüdesheim to Koblenz
Spend a couple of hours in Rüdesheim this morning where you may be tempted to savour a stein of beer at the Drosselgasse. Alternatively, join an optional excursion to Siegfried’s Museum of Mechanical Music. Enjoy an afternoon of scenic cruising along what is probably the most famous and scenic stretch of the Rhine Valley, past hilltop castles, terraced vineyards and attractive riverside villages. Highlights include the 132-metre Lorelei Rock and the ruined fortress of Rheinfels. You’ll spend the late afternoon and evening moored in the pretty wine town of Koblenz.
You’ll have an entire morning in Germany’s cultural capital where a must-see sight is its UNESCO-listed cathedral – it’s Germany’s most visited landmark! Depart early afternoon and spend the rest of the day cruising towards Amsterdam, passing through the flat polder landscape of South Holland overnight.
Awake to the sights and sounds of Amsterdam. An optional sightseeing and walking tour will help you get your bearings and, with the whole day here, there will be time for some independent exploration too. Stroll beside the canals and explore the plethora of museums, enjoy a spot of people watching from one of the cafes or some last-minute souvenir shopping in one of the quirky boutiques. Moor here overnight.
