Summer is a great time to visit the Land of Ice and Fire, when the midnight sun illuminates the land, creating long summer days. Outdoor pursuits, such as caving and hiking, river rafting and whale watching, become even more alluring and are a great way to uncover some of the islands natural wonders. Shaped by mighty forces the islands varied landscape conceals geysers, bubbling mud pools, glaciers, lagoons and other fascinating natural phenomena. Although the scenery and wildlife are a definite draw for many of Icelands visitors, the countrys culture begs to be explored too.

Just a short stroll around the tiny capital city of Reykjavik will reveal that this little island was once inhabited by the fiercest of ancient warriors, the Vikings. Perhaps learn more about them at one of several museums documenting their arrival in the 9th century. The city also has an important literary, music and art scene, and plays host to various cultural festivals throughout the year. While here you may like to sample some local delicacies too, such as hangikjt (smoked lamb), best served before the popular dessert of skyr and bilberries a great way to truly experience the unique Icelandic traditions!

Situated just below the Arctic Circle, Isafjrdur is a small town thats easy to explore on foot. It has a wonderful natural harbour, which makes this one of Iceland’s primary fishing and trading centres. In the town, the Westfjords Heritage Museum has exhibits on the towns maritime history, while the Old Hospital contains archives and photography.

Despite its diminutive size, Isafjrdur is the largest town in the Westfjords region of Iceland which is a nature lovers paradise a popular excursion visits the magical island of Vigur, which is home to a large eider duck colony and vast bird population. Join Spirit of Adventure for her maiden visit to the port of Grundafjrdur. The town is situated on the north coast of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, the landscape of which so inspired the 19th-century novelist Jules Verne, it became the setting for his famed work Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

Grundafjrdur itself has a population of just 900 people and the main industry is fishing, boosted by tourism from those seeking out the incredible beauty of the region. Backed by waterfalls and snow-capped peaks, the main attraction here is the iconic Kirkjufell mountain. Thanks to its distinctive slopes and steeple-like peak, it is said to be one of the most photographed spots in Iceland, having also featured in the tv show Game of Thrones. Wildlife enthusiasts might like to join an excursion to Melrakkey Island, which, in the summer months, is home to a large colony of Atlantic puffins.
