The pretty, hilly streets of Portugals capital are a fantastic introduction to this wonderful country. We then head to the elegant university town of Coimbra and Porto, a charming riverside city. We dine at family owned wine estates and sample delicious port wines along the stunning Douro River Valley. We explore the Golden City of Salamanca. Finally, we can travel back in time to Portugals excellent first archaeological park and the countrys birthplace: beautifully preserved Guimarães.

Day 1 Lisbon – Coimbra – Porto
Travel through the beautiful countryside to Porto, stopping en route to explore Coimbra, the birthplace of six Portuguese kings. The city is also home to the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in Europe, with a splendid 18th century library – the Joanina Library. From here, head to a local restaurant for a traditional Portuguese lunch, and continue on to Porto to embark S.S. São Gabriel (5-star), the most luxurious vessel on the Douro.
Day 2 Porto – Cruising the River Douro – Entre-os-Rios
Theres much more to Portugals second city than its eponymous fortified wine – historic architecture, cutting-edge design, fabulous food and wine, and a hip, laid-back vibe. Discover its many charms with your choice of distinctively different tours today. Later, we cruise up the Douro towards Entre-os-Rios.
Day 3 Cruising the River Douro – Rgua – Pinho
Today is all about wine, which has been cultivated in the Douro River Valley since ancient Roman times. Learn the history of Port during your visit to the Douro Museum, then treat yourself to a tasting and a hearty, rustic-style dinner at a family owned wine estate.
Day 4 Pinho – Vega de Terrn
Feel the centuries fall away as your ship winds its way through the pristine, dramatic, UNESCO-protected landscapes of the Douro River Valley. Head ashore for a choice of excursions: a tasting at a prestigious port wine estate or a vineyard hike with a wine tasting at a local quinta.
Day 5 Vega de Terrn (Salamanca) – Barca dAlva
Visit the historic university town of Salamanca – the Golden City – famous for its sand-coloured buildings and abundance of churches. Rejoin the ship in Barca dAlva.
Day 6 Barca dAlva – Rgua
A tiny village surrounded by mountains, Barca dAlva is your base for today's adventures. Visit Castelo Rodrigo, singled out as one of Portugals 12 historic villages for its medieval beauty. The view from the top is incredible and the village is a charming place to ramble, relax and replenish. Or, if you wish, you can view some prehistoric carvings during a visit to Portugals first archaeological park, Foz Côa.
Day 7 Cruising the River Douro – Porto (Guimares)
Choose to visit Guimarães, the town where Portugal was born, with well-preserved architecture and stylish young residents. Or opt to explore one of Portos oldest areas, picturesque Ribeira, considered the soul of the city. In the evening, a special gala dinner will be prepared for you.
