Explore the main highlights of Greece and Turkey on this 24-night voyage that sails into the furthest reaches of the Mediterranean, where some of the worlds greatest art and architecture was born. Discover more about the life and work of Pablo Picasso during your visit to Mlaga; while in Valletta you can see the work of Caravaggio, as well as a plethora of splendid architecture built by the Knights of St John. Step further back in time in Heraklion, Mykonos and Piraeus where you can explore the ancient ruins of Knossos Palace, stroll through the open-air museum of Delos and gaze in awe at the incredible Acropolis of Athens.

Cruise through the Dardenelles to uncover the imprint left by the Byzantine, Roman and Ottoman Empires in Istanbul and go in search of the legendary city of Troy from Canakkale. Your visit to Sardinias historic capital, Cagliari, unearths a maze of golden-hued palazzi and facades, crowned by a hilltop citadel. For a unique glimpse of Cagliari as it once was, perhaps head underground at the Church of St Eulalia, where a paved road, a house and temple dating back to the pre-Roman period were excavated.

Located on the Costa del Sol, the sun-blessed city of Malaga flourished under the Moorish Rule. Anincluded panoramic tourreveals the citys highlights, including the Alcazaba a well-preserved Moorish palace-fortress dating from the 11th century. Take the time to explore the surrounding gardens and enjoy the views across the city. There is plenty to do in and around Malaga, which is home to numerous museums, such as the Picasso Museum, Flamenco Museum and Malaga Automobile Museum. You can also delve into Malagas Roman past at the first century AD theatre which was unearthed in 1951 right in the city centre. Alternatively, you might prefer to explore further afield and visit Granada to see the awe-inspiring Alhambra Palace.

The tiny Mediterranean island of Malta has over 7,000 years of history, from megalithic temples to ancient fortified cities, and the UNESCO-listed capital dates back to the 16th century and the Knights of St John. Anincluded sightseeing touris the perfect introduction to this historic island, but if you would prefer to explore independently, Valletta is easily explored on foot.

Stroll the narrow limestone streets, admiring traditional wooden Maltese balconies painted in an array of colours, and soak up the views across the harbour from the peaceful Upper Barrakka gardens. Dont miss the chance to marvel at the glittering Baroque interior of St Johns Co-Cathedral, or perhaps head in land to the walled city of Mdina, an impressive hilltop citadel that was once the islands capital.

Named after Hercules, the capital of the Greek island of Crete has an extensive history stretching over 5,000 years. Once under Arabic, Venetian and Ottoman rule, both the islands landscape and Heraklion itself are dotted with ancient relics that reveal more of its fascinating past. As you explore the charming backstreets hidden behind the fortification walls, look out for beautiful Venetian and Turkish fountains scattered across the city. You can choose to uncover more of Crete’s history on a visit to the Palace of Knossos, court of the legendary King Minos whose wife Pasiphae gave birth to the Minotaur, half-bull, half-man. The Heraklion Archaeology Museum, which is regarded as one of the most important museums in Greece, is also a must-see attraction.

A popular holiday destination, Mykonos is one of the prettiest and most photographed Greek islands. It offers a dazzling panoramic landscape of traditional Cycladic architecture where white domed houses gleam in the sun and the blue paintwork mirrors the sky and sea. High-end boutiques, trendy galleries and gourmet restaurants contrast perfectly with 16th-century Venetian windmills and 15th-century whitewashed churches.

Perhaps take a boat trip to the nearby island of Delos, home to a prominent archaeological site and the mythical birthplace of the Greek god Apollo. Alternatively, spend the afternoon roaming Mykonos labyrinth of streets designed to foil pillaging pirates in times of yore, or head to one of the beautiful soft sand beaches to soak up the sun.

Canakkale is located at the narrowest point of the Dardanelles, the stretch of water which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Sea of Marmara. This quiet Turkish port town is the gateway to the ruins of Troy, immortalised by Homer in the epic poem the Iliad. This UNESCO-listed site was the legendary setting for the Trojan War, finally conquered by the Greeks using the infamous Trojan Horse.

If you choose to visit, take time to explore the ancient ruins seeking out the Temple of Athena, the Bronze Age ramp and the town’s ramparts. Back in Canakkale, dont miss the sizeable wooden horse used in the filming of the 2004 movie, Troy, starring Brad Pitt.

Head up to the top deck as Spirit of Discovery approaches Istanbul; the incredible skyline of domes and minarets is one to remember. The only city in the world to straddle two continents Europe and Asia and the final stage on the legendary Silk Road, Istanbul is melting pot of cultures. Apanoramic tourof the city takes in the highlights including the Old Citys sea walls, the Golden Horn and the iconic Hagia Sophia, famed for its immense dome and beautiful mosaics.

Be sure to seek out remnants of the Ottoman era, such as the elegant Blue Mosque and the impressive complex of Topkapi Palace. For a taste of authentic Istanbul, visit the Grand Bazaar. With over 4,000 merchants its the largest covered market in the world, making it the perfect spot to pick up a souvenir, or to try an energy-boosting cup of Turkish coffee.

From Piraeus it’s just a short hop into Athens, one of the great cities of antiquity, where many memorable sights await you. An overnight stay in port means youve got plenty of time to see the highlights, starting with anincluded orientation tour. The city sprawls around a rocky hill called the Acropolis, crowned by the Parthenon Temple, dedicated to the citys patron, the ancient goddess, Athena.
