Experience the Spanish way of life with visits to Mlaga, birthplace of Pablo Picasso, and Mahn, where a mix of architectural styles from Georgian and neo-Classical, to Baroque and Romanesque can be seen. Hopping across to the island of Corsica, take your time to explore the evocative old town of Ajaccio, home to the Fesch Museum with its collection of Italian masterpieces by the likes of Botticelli and Michelangelo, and the Bonaparte Museum, which is set within the family home of this early European stateman.

The promise of another island adventure will lure you to the shores of Sardinia and the historic port of Olbia. Stroll along the Corso Umberto avenue to see the Pisan Romaneque architecture of the 12th-century Basilica of San Simplicio. While the islands capital, Cagliari, conceals a number of architectural gems within the medieval walls of its battlements. To delve further in time, perhaps head to Nora to see Carthaginian and Roman ruins. Enjoy a visit to the Moorish town of Almeria, your final port of call, where the Alcazaba castle is one of the largest Muslim fortresses in Spain.

Quieter and more relaxed than the resorts of neighbouring Majorca, the capital of Minorca is a great place to unwind with its array of cafes, restaurants and colourful shops. Occupied by the British during the 18th century, its colonial rule is spelt out in the Georgian-influenced architecture, dotted among remains that are neoclassical, baroque and Romanesque, which you can appreciate on anincluded scenic tour.

Perhaps go in search of the 18th-century Santa Maria Church, watch the boats bobbing in the harbour or learn the history of the island at the Museum of Minorca, housed in a 17th-century monastery. Further afield lies the opportunity to see a display of Minorcan horses and the unique Iberian style of horsemanship at a stud farm in the coastal regions of Cala Galdana.

Ajaccio is the capital and gateway to the island’s rugged and fragrant interior, as well as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. Trace the legacy of the prominent military leader, born here in 1769, and perhaps visit his ancestral home, Maison Bonaparte, now a national museum showcasing period furnishings and artefacts of the famous rulers life.

Another museum worth a visit is the Palace Fesch Museum of Fine Arts, which houses one of the most beautiful collections of Italian paintings in France. Alternatively, soak up the sun on the trendy waterfront promenade, and peruse the market in search of local liqueurs, sweet treats and cheeses.

This small city on the north-eastern coast of Sardinia is the gateway to the sparkling white sand beaches of the Costa Esmeralda, where the rich and famous flock for a slice of la dolce vita. Once a fishing village, Olbia is now Sardinias busiest ferry port, and a tourist hub offering a variety of attractions. The centre, Corso Umberto, is packed with shops, wine bars and shady piazzas that lead up to the bustling waterfront, from where you can admire the views around the bay.

Be sure to visit the citys two churches, the Basilica of San Simplicio and the Church of San Paolo, and the Archaeology Museum for an insight into the citys ancient history. Alternatively, travel to the nearby town of Calangianus, renowned for the production and export of cork, or take a wonderfully scenic journey through picturesque valleys and villages on the narrow-gauge Trenino Verde train.
